The place depicted appears familiar, evoking quasi- Roman architecture, hollows from Italian Renaissance parks or lost Persian gardens. Only patient observation, the central requirement confronting the spectator of these works, reveals that this architecture borders on fantasy, so that despite out feeling of deja vu we have not been there, nor will we ever be, since the place does not exist.
